Library
Although I am only a Page, my library allows me to create displays, example pieces, and assist in competitions. I have worked in my library since my college days and I got to make pretty interesting things throughout the years.
Pirate Ship
Summer 2024
Every year my library has an event called Summer Reading where we host activities, crafts, and promote reading for our kid guests. One of the crafts was to create your own flag to be put on a ship. My librarians asked me to create a large scale version of a Pirate Ship from a popular show. I was only allowed to use what we had in the library so I used 4 cardboard trifolds, pencils to sketch, color pencils, and markers to outline. It was used for decoration in the big meeting room until it was time for the craft.
Poetry Tree
Spring 2024
We had poetry week in March 2024 and we had to make a display to showcase famous poets and encourage our guests to read more poetry books. My librarian gave me a tree reference image and asked me to create a large cardboard version of the image to fit our area. I used another large cardboard trifold, sketched with pencil, and outlined with markers. I decided to add a bit of color to make it pop. I don’t have a photo of the display, but here is the tree. It is more than half my height. We cut mini scrolls of short poetry for our guests to have a pocket poem.
Dragon Puppet
Lunar New Year 2024
To celebrate the year of the dragon, my children’s librarian hosted a dragon puppet craft. I drew on the big eraser board a long eastern dragon to have a big visual and created my own version of the dragon puppet to be used as a reference for the kids. I then walked around to help out if anyone needed assistance.
Culture Pass 2024
2024
Culture Pass is paired up with your library card, it acts as a free admission to dozens of New York City’s cultural institutions throughout the five boroughs. There is a competition hosted every year amongst the public libraries to promote the use of culture pass and its importance. This year was the 400th year anniversary and our branch worked hard to create mini figures and landscapes of our selected cultural institutions within the 5 boroughs. I personally worked on the Van Cortlandt House Museum, Queens Botanical Garden, New York Botanical Garden, and the Bronx Musical Heritage Center. I helped out bits and pieces of the other displays as well. We won honorable mentions under Queens Public Library: Bayside.
Time Capsule
Summer 2023
Our library decided to host a time capsule for the kids in our branch and my librarian tasked the volunteers and I to decorate the treasure box. We were given artistic freedom and I opted for a steampunk treasure chest. I drew the dragon nesting in the chest, while my coworkers worked on bedazzling and adding additional visuals.
Culture Pass 2023
2023
This was the first Culture Pass I participated in. I submitted the idea of creating a board game version of Monopoly, but instead of buying property you get to traverse the board of the 5 boroughs and visit different cultural institutions and learn more about them. My librarian fleshed out the details and functionality of the game while I helped with decoration and creation of displays on the board. We won honorable mentions for our branch.
